The Mythical Clyde Cod

As we arrived on location last night, filled with the usual sense of hope and anticipation, with the moon illuminating the estuary and in cold still conditions, expectations weren’t too low. They weren’t overly high either, as for the remainder of the flood tide we were after a creature of almost mythological legend; a Clyde Cod.

After choosing a suitable area, I began to assemble my assault. A 40lb shock leader was painstakingly attached to a 20lb main line. A carefully, pre built and tidily stored Pennel/ Pulley rig was unrolled and secured to the shock leader.

A cocktail of Mackerel and Squid was tightly bound with elastic and mounted perfectly on the 3/0 Pennel and eventually we were ready to send it into the darkness. A gentle wind up and an easy Pendulum cast, looking to reach maybe only 100 yards was executed and….. CRACK!!!! I easily made 100 yards, however my main line failed to follow.

This short sequence of events reflects perfectly how 2020 has been for me so far. The usual meticulous planning and preparation has failed miserably to provide the results. We have caught fish, but almost all have been of the miniature variety and, perhaps at least for one fish, that evening was to be little different.

Nevertheless, there was to be a silver lining in the peculiar shape of a nice Short Spinned Sea Scorpion, a fish that I was, believe it or not, quietly hoping for that night. Perhaps things are beginning to look up and you can bet that our persistence and determination will shamelessly continue.
