Flounders; A Stab in the Dark

A last minute decision to squeeze in one more session before the New Year saw an impromptu visit to the beach. The venue was Ardrossan South Beach, an area which I believe has the possibility of throwing up some nice Flounders. However, with this being our first attempt here, it was a literally a stab in the dark.

Morrisons with the best option for a bait.

After hastily sourcing some suitable bait, we arrived in complete darkness. Not knowing the beach and with almost zero visibility, it was impossible to pick out the areas and features that were likely to hold fish, so it was a roll of the dice and off we set.

Fishing the last 2 hours of the Ebb and the first 3 of the Flood felt like the right time and confidence was fairly high. However it wasn’t until an hour after slack water that we started getting rattles on the rod tips.

Perfect conditions under the stars.

Unfortunately not the Flounders we were after, but plenty tiny sets of eyes and teeth kept us entertained for the remainder of the session.

Despite the distinct lack of fish it was a lovely night to be on the sand, on a beach that I still feel has potential. I think a little more research into the area is needed and a few more exploratory sessions are on the cards.

Small Whiting saving the dreaded blank.
